Intro
"Water's Journey through the Everglades" project was an ambitious undertaking that aimed to provide visitors with an immersive and educational experience focused on the unique ecology of the Everglades. Ten exhibits were created using a range of emerging technologies, including mixed reality, interactive touch displays, multimedia projections, and hands-on activities, to educate visitors about the importance of this fragile ecosystem, and the ways in which human activity has impacted it over time. Visitors were able to explore the diverse plant and animal life of the Everglades, and to learn about the ways in which water moves through the ecosystem, from rainfall to runoff to groundwater recharge.

MY ROLE

As the Experience Designer and Project Manager for the "Water's Journey through the Everglades" project, my responsibilities were twofold. Firstly, as an experience designer, I collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to conceptualize and design the immersive exhibits. I conducted extensive research on the unique ecology of the Everglades, identifying key educational objectives and determining the most effective ways to convey information to visitors. Leveraging emerging technologies, such as mixed reality, interactive touch displays, multimedia projections, and hands-on activities, I crafted engaging and informative experiences that brought the ecosystem to life. Secondly, as the project manager, I oversaw the entire project's lifecycle, from initial planning to final implementation. This included coordinating with stakeholders, managing timelines and budgets, leading the team, and ensuring the smooth execution of the project. By effectively blending my expertise in experience design and project management, I successfully delivered an immersive and educational experience that showcased the significance of the Everglades' ecology and the impact of human activities on its delicate balance.

PRODUCT

The "Water's Journey through the Everglades" project was a groundbreaking endeavor aimed at providing visitors with an immersive and educational experience that delved into the unique ecology of the Everglades. Through the creation of ten exhibits, visitors were taken on a journey to explore the intricate web of life within this fragile ecosystem. The exhibits addressed crucial topics such as human encroachment and its impact on animal populations, exemplified by a thought-provoking interactive where users constructed a house while the other simulated a storm, competing to determine the house's fate. Another exhibit was the hurricane simulator, which provided a firsthand understanding of the devastating effects of hurricanes on the Everglades. Additionally, the project featured the Florida table, an interactive experience that demonstrated the flow of water across the state. Users had the opportunity to strategically place cities and roads, witnessing the long-term alterations caused by human activities to the natural water flow. Through cutting-edge technologies, including mixed reality and interactive displays, this project successfully engaged and educated visitors about the vital importance of preserving the Everglades' ecology and the consequences of human interventions on this fragile ecosystem.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Construction projects may encounter unexpected challenges, and in certain cases, the execution may deviate from the initial plan. For instance, during a recent project, several technical components had to be readjusted at the last minute due to an error in placing the wrong conduit size within the concrete floor.
  • "The Florida Table" showcases group interactions that provide distinctive perspectives and insights from various angles and skill levels. These interactions create a unique platform for exploration and learning.
  • The essence of meaningful interactions lies in the exploration and discovery of seemingly uninteresting concepts. By incorporating these core mechanics, individuals can uncover hidden value and derive significance from what initially appears mundane.
